Re: Happy Ramadan
In my experience religion is a good thing in people’s lives. In the main they teach us to me nice to people and care for them.

Muzzies have got a bad reputation because some factions take it too far. We work with a lot of them, and if you listen to what they say about Ramadan you’ll see it’s a great event for brining family together and giving to charity.

Re: Happy Ramadan
I don’t know about that, to stop believing in god you have to be quite cynical and thereafter you get cynical about pretty well everything that is fed to you through life.

Believe nothing and trust no one is more the case no?

“When men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing, they then become capable of believing in anything.” G.K. Chesterton

Sounds about right with all the loony conspiracy theories some people seem to belive in these days

Doesn't Golden Oldie believe in almost all the conspiracy theories going, without ceasing to believe in God?

At the very least, you can't blame atheism for him...

Re: Happy Ramadan
"...There's something valuable in a short period of self-denial. We have discarded (with scorn) so many of our forebears' wisdom, but since the 'enlightenment' of the 1960s, we appeared to have collapsed in many ways (lack of stoicism; family breakdown; generations on welfare; hostility between the sexes, I could go on...). Though of course there has also been progress, no denying that. Maybe we atheists should think about that from time to time and borrow some ideas (e.g. stoicism; self-reliance; a short period of self-denial) from ancient wisdom. After all, we've apparently only been grown up and enlightened for the last fifty years since The Beatles and Mary Quant, but humans were around for a fair few years before that."

Alain de Botton wrote a book on this very subject a few years ago. Religion for Atheists.

Re The Beatles, Tom Holland's book Dominion: The Making of the Western Mind makes the case that 60s culture is just Christian heresy. Religion unmoored from belief. "All you need is Love" couldn't have been written if the culture wasn't Christian.

I'm back and didn't get arrested! Wore jeans and t-shirts/shirts for the most part, but after seeing plenty of people in shorts (foreigners and locals) I went and asked at reception. The girl I spoke to couldn't speak English so she phoned someone who laughed at me when I asked - it very much was ok, even during the day during Ramadan. Popped jeans on to go to the Grand Mosque, but other than that spent a happy day in shorts.

Things are definitely relaxing there.

...And lo did Jesus travel to the village of Bournevllle for he had a great commercial idea to shift units after the Christmas lull and before Summer kicked in.

Re: Happy Ramadan
brabrook,

I could not give a flying fuck about either only difference to me is my bank holidays are based on the lies the Christian calendar is based on to interweave it with the pagan calendar.

if they gave me days to be with my family or not be at work for Ramadan I would take those instead.

I do like chocolate though, but dont really give a shit what shape it comes in.

Re: Happy Ramadan
Fucking joke the way the UK is making this a very important time for Muslims yet on the other hand Christmas by many is now Happy Holiday's and the word Easter taken off Easter Eggs.

What a joke this country has become.

Mike

"please, keep me out of it."

Have you been press ganged down to the mosque again Mike? Or dragged into church by the local Catholic priest?

Long Term Weapons Grade Virtual Signalling.

As are all religious rituals.

I've no issue with people drawing comfort from whichever fairy tale they like most, but, please, keep me out of it.

Cheers gents - that's pretty conclusive. I assumed it'd be a no-no, but the person on Reddit definitely said it'd be ok. I might leave a pair in my bag just in case they've softened on it - women can drive now after all!
